i-City brightens up Malaysia
i-City brightens up Malaysia
Wonderland attraction: Many have been captivated by i-City’s vibrant and colourful lights on its property.
Malaysia’s city of digital lights, i-City, has been listed in the top 25 of the most bright and colourful places in the world by CNN.
The urban development located in Shah Alam, Selangor, made the 21st spot in the list, joining the ranks of globally renowned locations led by Australia’s Great Barrier Reef which came in first.
Other top locations in the list include Holland’s tulip fields (13th), Rio de Janeiro in Brazil (16th), Times Square in New York (23) and Venice (25).
“i-City in Selangor, is a peculiar blend of a hi-tech development centre and an amusement park that includes an ice palace called the Snowalk, where the indoors is kept at freezing temperatures to preserve chambers of ice lit with coloured lights,” the CNN list read.
“In the evenings, outdoors in the tropical heat, millions of twinkling lights illuminate the trees in every artificial colour imaginable.
“It’s a Christmas yard display amped up to the nth degree,” the list said.
The 25 locations selected, said CNN, were places where nature’s palette concocts colours that seem unreal, or where designers have turned ordinary neighbourhoods into wonderlands.
In response, i-City said it welcomed the accolade which has now put it firmly on the global stage.
“It is very much an honour to receive the accolade as one of the world’s most colourful places in the world together with beautiful cities such as Cape Town, Tokyo, Argentina, Italy and France.
“A convergence of both technology and art, the digital lightscapes showcase will constantly be updated according to themes and festive celebrations,” the i-City statement said.
Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) president Datuk Hamzah Rahmat said the listing was good news for Malaysia’s tourism industry.
“It’s not easy to get in such a list and the accolade given to i-CIty also shows the big role that the private sector in Malaysia plays in helping to promote tourism in our country,” he said.
v Civil servant Anisyuhada Zulkifle, 29, said she first visited i-City as a university student and was captivated by the colourful lights.
“The lights there are simply beautiful beyond words. Not only are the trees covered in lights, they also have lights shaped like flowers, so it’s very unique,” she said.
A graduate student, who only wanted to be known as Fatin, said i-City was also enjoyable for its many attractions.
“I don’t like taking pictures that much, but the sights at i-City are a unique experience that you won’t forget easily,” said Fatin.

Sky’s the limit - Skybar
Sky’s the limit
The newly renovated SkyBar in Traders Hotel Kuala Lumpur.
IF you haven’t been to Traders Hotel Kuala Lumpur’s iconic Skybar recently, perhaps you should check it out. The bar, perched on the 33rd floor of the hotel, after all made it to The New York Times’ list of must-go places in KL a couple of years back.
Skybar went through a refurbishment recently and has emerged with two gleaming new bars, a revamped sitting area and a culinary bay for food preparation.
The multi-award-winning bar previously did have some problems with circulation, but now with its new Big Ass (as it’s affectionately known) fan overhead, that’s a thing of the past. And with the new blinds, there’s lots of interesting light play in the interior of the bar in the afternoons.
The 26m pool is still the glittering centrepiece and perhaps only challenged by the amazing view of the KL skyline, particularly at night. The signature cocktails are still available but complemented with the new tapas menu.
What hasn’t changed are the different DJs spinning different genres of music on different days. And the crowd is still hip and happening.

KL Citywalk launched
KL Citywalk launched
KUALA LUMPUR’S latest attraction the KL CityWalk was officially launched by city mayor Tan Sri Ahmad Fuad Ismail recently.
The first alfresco strip mall in the city, KL CityWalk is a place where heritage and history are captured through hand-picked emerging Malaysian entrepreneurs.
It is part of the beautification plan that took a decade to be realised to make Kuala Lumpur a world-class tourist destination.
The task of developing the project was awarded to Trend Matrix Enterprises Sdn Bhd.
The 500m row of shops fronting Jalan P. Ramlee and Jalan Pinang, has 54 boutique outlets. It is managed by KL CityWalk Enterprises Sdn Bhd.

Making it official: Ahmad Fuad (third from left) launching the KL City Walk in Jalan P. Ramlee with (from left) DBKL directorgeneral Datuk Salleh Yusop, Tourism Malaysia Board chairman Datuk Victor Wee and acting Tourism Malaysia director-general Datuk Azizan Nordin.
At the launch, Fuad said KL CityWalk was another tourism product for Kuala Lumpur.
He said the area used be a monsoon drain that was underused but had now been transformed.
“If we have more such places, we would not mind having the private sector enhance them because it promotes a cleaner, healthier and conducive environment.
“The 10-year wait could be related to the building specifications but we had a discussion to get it moving.
“We want more tourists to come, so we have to offer different products. At present, KLCC is the top tourist spot followed by Dataran Merdeka,” he said, adding that walkways created convenience for people to move from place to place.
When asked if there were other areas or plans similar to KL CityWalk, Fuad said there was none at the moment.
Peaceful niche: KL CityWalk is ideal for those who prefer to take a stroll.
“We have to see the feasibility as not every place can be developed in such a way,” he said.
During the event, Fuad also launched the VisitKL Tourism Centre at KL CityWalk that operates from 9am to 5.30am daily.
Trend Matrix managing director Ronnie Choong said KL CityWalk was a showcase featuring lifestyle, culture, heritage and history.
He said the strategic location in the immediate area offered an ideal place to meet and revel in the sights, sounds and taste of the city.
“About RM20mil was spent as part of this beautification project.
