Get on tram for city tour
City Hall launches battery- operated trams which depart daily from KL City Gallery
THOSE opting for a guided tour of Kuala Lumpur's heritage trail can hop on the city's spanking new eco-friendly trams.
The ride on these battery operated trams costs RM2 per person.
It makes two trips a day and departs from the KL City Gallery daily.
The two-hour tram ride is between 6km and 8km and covers Dataran Merdeka and passes by iconic buildings as well as the Tun Abdul Razak Heritage Park.
The tram plays pre-recorded messages to guide tourists while making stops at 14 attractions at the Tun Abdul Razak Heritage Park for passengers to take photos.
Passengers can opt to get off any stop and continue the ride at a much later time as the tickets are full-day passes.
However, on the Heritage Trail's bike rides and walks, visitors in a tour group of 10 and 30, will have to pay a fee for the tour guides.
On the Heritage Trail, a bicycle can be rented for RM30.
Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said the trams are an option to those who do not want to ride bicycles to enjoy the heritage trail packages.
Tengku Adnan launched the service at Dataran Underground here yesterday, after boarding a tram from the Islamic Arts Museum to the KL City Gallery.
The event was also held concurrently with the KL Food and Cultural Festival here.
He said there are four trams and these Malaysian-made trams cost City Hall RM500,000.
"If there is a demand, we will increase the number of trams and extend the services to KLCC and Masjid India," he said, adding that the authority had several hiccups in getting the approval for the trams due to road safety issues.
He said City Hall would be allowing trams on the bicycle lanes of the trails.
"But I urge motorists not to drive or park on the road shoulders as this is dangerous," he said, adding that City Hall would be notifying tour bus operators to turn their engines off in Dataran Merdeka to improve the air quality in the area.
Tengku Adnan also said City Hall would be working with the police to keep Dataran Merdeka, which gets more than 3,000 tourists daily, free of crime.
He also launched City Hall's official mobile application for its VisitKL tourism portal.
The site and the application has various travel information including places to stay, eat and how to get around the city.
It also has links to YouTube as well as social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter.
The VisitKL app can be downloaded through the Apple App Store and Android devices.
