Thean Hou Temple starts 15-day CNY celebration
A festive programme, from today until Chap Goh Meh, has been lined up for visitors at Thean Hou Temple in Taman Seputeh, here.
Visitors will first be welcomed by the sight of the temple's new gates, built in the shape of lanterns, at the entrance.
Near the entrance, the stage is set for musical, cultural and acrobatic performances to take place for their entertainment.
The stage is adorned by giant lanterns in the shape of globes, surrounded by nine rearing horses.
The nine horses are symbolic of new hope for a better global economy in the Year of the Horse, said Selangor and Federal Territory Hainan Association chief executive secretary Jean Lum Lee Chun.
Artificial cherry blossom trees, just installed this month, surround the statues of 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac.
Among the entertainment highlights of the 15-day programme are the acrobatic shows by performers from China and Asia Pacific Circus and Acrobatic, lion dance by Thean Hou Temple Lion and Dragon Dance Troupe, a Chinese craft exhibition and calligraphy contest.
Just like in previous years, hundreds of red lanterns, believed to bring good luck and success, are hung across the third floor of the temple.
Prayer rooms and altars of the God of Prosperity, God of Medicine, God of Scholars and Examinations, and more, are also on the third floor.
Finally, on Chap Goh Meh, which falls on Valentine's Day this year, a mass wedding of 138 couples will take place at the temple.
Lum said the number 138 was auspicious as it sounded like "Wealthy for life" in Chinese.
The wedding will start at 9am, followed by a lion dance, games and activities hosted by 8TV, a lantern puzzle and lantern competition.
The celebration will culminate in a fireworks show lasting 12-and-a- half minutes at 10.30pm.
