Monorail: Four-car trains make debut

Four-car trains make debut

The Rapid KL Monorail Line started putting the first two of its Malaysian-made four-car trains into service recently, marking a new era for the service.

Each of the four-car trains can accommodate 430 passengers per trip, compared with 213 passengers for the two-car trains.

Rapid KL Monorail Line chief operating officer Abdul Hadi Amran said Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd was happy to put the two trains into service as they could significantly reduce waiting time for passengers.

“With the doubling of the train capacity, we are able to take in more passengers at one time.

“Passengers need not wait for the next train. They can comfortably board the train now. With more four-car trains coming in next year, our service will be even better,” said Hadi who gave souvenirs to commuters to show appreciation for their support.

He said every car was equipped with four closed-circuit television cameras, newly-designed space for wheelchairs and strollers, and light-emitting diodes.

Hadi said two more four-car trains were scheduled to come into service by the first quarter of next year.

“The remaining eight will be deployed in stages. All 12 trains are scheduled to be in operation by the end of next year,” he said.

“Upon the delivery and commissioning of all 12 trains, the two-car trains, which have been in operational since 2003, will be decommissioned.”

Rapid Rail had also upgraded all its 11 stations, by installing universal access features and extending the stations’ platforms.

“We have also added a new wing at the Bukit Bintang station and an overhead bridge for direct access to KL Sentral Station from Nu Sentral,” he said.

Monorail has a daily ridership of about 65,000 and operates at 35 per cent overcapacity during peak hours.

Housewife Yusnani Yusoff, who was among the first to board the four-car trains, said: “Many people commute to Bukit Bintang every day and they need good transport. So, I am happy that we now have the four-car trains which are more spacious than the two-car trains.”

Marketing executive Nurul Nadia Abdul Hamid, 27, said, previously, she would give the ride a miss, especially during peak hours.

“The train can be too crowded with people heading to work, but now we do not have to wait for the next train as the four-car train can take more people at one go. I think more people will use monorail, especially on weekends,” she said, adding that she couldn’t wait for all the four-car trains to be fully operational.

College student Anissa Rifadiien from Jakarta said she was delighted to see the four-car trains.

“This new train is more spacious and more comfortable. We like it,” said Anissa who was travelling with her friends.

Her sentiments were echoed by Lim Eng Hwa, 62, who uses the monorail from the KL Sentral station to Titiwangsa, every Saturday.

“The new train is way better and more comfortable for the passengers.

“This will definitely encourage more people to use public transport while travelling around the city,” he said. By Nor Ain Mohamed Radhi

“We are excited to collaborate with City Hall to make it convenient for tourists to book a taxi at the terminals,” he said.

SPAD clamps down on illegal taxis at KLIA2

SPAD clamps down on illegal taxis at KLIA2

The Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) is coming down hard on illegal taxis at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (KLIA2) following complaints about pirate taxis and their touts.

During an operation named Op Parasite on Sept 10, the commission nabbed two pirate taxis and a tout.

The 90-minute operation started at 9pm and involved 132 SPAD officers who went undercover as passengers at the arrival hall.

The illegal taxi drivers and touts were booked for offering public transport services without licence, fixing a rate for transport services, picking up passengers at a non-designated place, and for not using the meter.

One of the pirate taxis seized was a Mercedez Benz which offered two tourists from China a ride for RM120. The car was confiscated while the driver, a 57-year-old man, was taken in for questioning.

“From January till now, we have nabbed two touts and 11 pirate taxis in KLIA2.

“The cases are being investigated and if found guilty the culprits will charged under the Land Public Transport Act,” said Major General Datuk Paduka Che Hasni Che Ahmad.

For the pirate taxis, the vehicles will be confiscated and if found guilty, the ownership of the vehicle will be cancelled, while the touts will be brought to police station, released on bail, and prosecuted later.

Drivers of pirate taxis could be charged for offering transport services without a permit and liable for fines not more than RM10,000, and imprisonment of not more than two years or both.

Che Hasni said touts could face a fine of not more than RM50,000 or five years’ jail.

“I urge these people not to tarnish the image of our country. Tourists are being cheated on the first day in our country.”

Che Hasni said the pirate taxis charged between RM120 and RM300 for a single trip from KLIA to Kuala Lumpur city compared with the RM80 standard rate charged by licensed taxis.

“The rates may even go up to RM500 depending on who the passengers are, whether they are locals or tourists, and the type of car used.

“The charges are higher if a luxury car is used and if the tourists are from rich countries.

“There was a case of an Arab tourist who was charged RM500.

“The pirate taxis also put the lives of their passengers in jeopardy as the drivers are not registered with us.

“Vehicles offering public transport at KLIA and KLIA2 such as budget taxis, metered taxis, coupon taxis and limousines are registered with SPAD. These taxis are insured but the pirate taxis are not,” he said.

On how the pirate taxis operate, Hasni said the cars are parked around the KLIA2 building and the drivers loiter in the arrival hall waiting for passengers.

In some cases, the pirate taxis were recommended by friends of passengers who had visited Malaysia before and they will arrange with the pirate taxis to fetch them upon arrival.

Rail service has resumed

Rail service has resumed

The monorail service between Hang Tuah and Jalan Imbi stations have resumed after consultants from City Hall and Syarikat Prasarana Negara gave it the nod, said Mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Phesal Talib during a buka puasa event with members of Association of Public Housing Residents in Bandar Baru Sentul, here on Monday.

"The consultants have arrived at a conclusion that pillars supporting the tracks are strong and the track is completely safe for the monorail to resume its services," said Phesal.

On the road closure here, he said although a slip road had been opened to ease traffic congestion in the area, nevertheless the stretches between Jalan Hang Tuah to Jalan Imbi and Jalan Imbi to Jalan Hang Tuah remain closed.

Phesal said remedial works at the cave-in site at the Jalan Imbi-Jalan Pudu intersection would continue during the Hari Raya holidays and are expected to be completed by end of September.
